Goals. Everybody has them. Whether they wanna be President or they just wanna have a nice house when they grow up. We constantly set goals for ourselves. But how many of those goals do we actually reach?
Think about it. When you were a little kid, did you wanna be a firefighter? A police officer? A doctor? You had a goal. As you got older, did you just forget about those goals? Most people do.
We don't always follow through on our goals. We'll set a goal for ourselves, and we'll start off strong. We begin with a strong will to make it happen. Unless we're really dedicated, the closer we get to the end, the weaker our will gets. It's like a sprinter. At the beginning of the race, he stands at the starting line getting ready to run. He gets set to run with his mind on one thing: winning the race. The gun sounds, and he takes off. He gets a good jump on the lead and starts off strong. As he goes along, he gets tired and starts slowing down. The closer he gets, the weaker he is. Do you ever feel like that runner?
What does this have to do with religion? It's got a lot to do with it. Here's what I mean.
You go to church for years and decide you want to go to Heaven, no matter what it takes. You talk to your preacher and get baptized. You're starting the race off strong. For the first couple months, you try not to do anything wrong. You're following the Bible as well as you can. Still strong, and you're nearing your goal. You go to school and hang out with your friends. They may or may not know you're a Christian, but either way, you act like you just don't care. You start cussing, watching pornography, lying to your parents, whatever. Maybe it isn't that bad, but you're losing your will to make sure you do what it is you want to do. Maybe you forget all about it and just stop caring. Further away, right?
So then we go back to being a kid. You wanted to be something big. You wanted to be something amazing, but you just didn't follow through on it. You probably even forgot all about your childhood goals.
Now honestly, how many times has that happened to you? I'll bet that if you say it hasn't, you're probably lying. If you really haven't, that's amazing. But I know I have.
How do we get back on track? How do we make sure we follow through on our goals?
I try to do something to remind me of what I'm trying to get to. For example, I'm definitely trying to go to heaven. When I'm having a tough time, I simply carry my Bible around. It's a simple little trick to help me not to forget. Another example. I want to try to become a professional musician. It's not a main goal, but I still work at it. I practice a lot, I'm in the specialty center at Thomas Dale, and I play in the church band. A simple reminder for me is just listening to music, maybe even challenging myself to try to figure something out.
Maybe it's not that easy. Maybe you're overweight, and you're trying to lose a good amount of pounds. You just need to stay focused. It's definitely not easy. Don't expect it to be. Just "keep your eyes on the prize," and you'll be fine.

Wow Dale. I admit, I did have some CRAZY goals when I was younger, but now, my MOST important goal is to walk the christian life, so that when the time comes, I can spend the rest of eternaty with Christ.

That's great. Just make sure to remember and keep focused. It's a tough thing to do.

Yeah... it really is. Sometimes I really want to go with the world, and what the world wants to do, but then, I remember my goal.
